Application Guidelines

We are delighted that you are considering applying for the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling: Integrative Pathway course.

The detailed course information will provide you with an overview of the course and our entry criteria. We suggest you download the detailed course information for the course you have selected and read and digest it before starting to complete the application form.

  • Give yourself time to address the questions. This is your first piece of written work for the course so your responses will help us to select the shortlist.  Incomplete forms cannot be submitted.
  • If possible, print and check a copy for yourself. Not only is this a safeguard against data loss, but you may find it useful to read your application through before you submit it.
  • You will receive an automated response from City Lit that confirms receipt of your application.

We have designed the application form to help you to be clear about whether this is the most appropriate course for you and to enable you to understand as fully as possible the demands it will make.

As is typical on courses which have a more self-directed focus, this application will be used by both you and us as a formative part of the selection process. We cannot stress too strongly the need to spend time on completing it.

Key Dates

Application Submission

The Submission deadline is: 12:00pm on 31st May 2024

Interview Dates

Stage 1 Skills Assessment:         Friday 21st June 2024

Stage 2 Individual Interviews:     Friday 28th June 2024

Please note that interview dates are set and unfortunately, we cannot offer any alternatives.  Do ensure that you can commit to attending both dates before completing your application.

What will my application (application form and interview stages) be assessed on?

  • Ability to engage with the questions and demonstrate understanding.
  • Evidence of your understanding of your own need for personal development, self-evaluation, and self-awareness. That is to say; your understanding of yourself, your thoughts, and values and how you function internally and in relation to others.
  • Possession of the right personal qualities as a user of counselling skills
  • Demonstration of your ability to cope with the workload and the process of the course emotionally, psychologically, mentally and physically. It is good practice to require users of counselling skills and trainee counsellors to have resilience (the capacity to work with helpees / clients concerns without being personally diminished). Therefore, we ask that all applicants have no less than 12 – 18 months post severe emotional, psychological, mental, and physical wellbeing; and each individual will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • The interview stages will be a continuation of the assessment of your readiness and suitability for the course.

Your application for the diploma course will consist of four parts:

Application form

  • Please complete the application form to the best of your ability.
  • When you have finished, if you can print, and keep a copy for yourself. Not only is this a safeguard against data loss, but you may find it useful to read your application through before you submit it.

Theoretical essay with tutor feedback

  • We need a copy of a theoretical essay written on your level 3 certificate course with the feedback from your tutor.  You will be able to upload a copy of your theoretical essay as part of the application process.
  • Please note if you do not upload your theoretical essay, you will be unable to submit your application.

Self-review writing piece

  • We also ask you to write a reflective self-review piece on your personal development in relation to the learning from your level 3 certificate course. This piece of writing should be 500 words.
  • When you have completed your reflective self-review piece, you will need to save it as a Word document (.doc or dotx) or as a pdf if you are using a different package ie Apple Notes.
  • Please note if you do not upload your reflective self-review piece, you will be unable to submit your application.
